Things to Remember When Contacting College Coaches

Getting started with the college recruiting process can be a daunting, time consuming project. In order to be successful, your student athlete should be preparing to get in touch with coaches as soon as they enter high school! College coaches like to monitor the growth and progress of particular athletes over time, so getting on their radar early increases your chances of a follow-up somewhere along the line. There are a few things to remember when starting to contact coaches.

Video: Coaches aren’t going to be able to recruit in person as they did pre-pandemic, so having a professional highlight video is the best way to show them the kind of player you are. When filming and developing your video, remember these tips.

Digital Presence: Other than your highlight video, creating a stand-out digital portfolio to house your information can be the difference between a roster spot for you or another recruit. The easier it is for coaches to see you and locate your information, the more likely you receive invitations to prospect camps and other communication from colleges.

Professionalism: Whether it be how you portray yourself on social media or the email correspondence you send to coaches, consider each communication to be a mini interview. You want to sell yourself and your skills to these coaches as though you are the missing piece that their team needs. Make sure your communication is appropriate, spell-checked and consistent. If you don’t hear back the first time, DON’T GET DISCOURAGED. Coaches can be extremely busy, so simply find the right time for an update or follow-up.

With new rules surrounding college sports recruiting amid COVID-19, having a stand out digital presence and portfolio for your athlete is absolutely essential. We specialize in finding innovative ways for athletes to showcase themselves to college coaches. Whether you’re an athlete trying to get recruited, or a coach trying to gain unique exposure for your players or program, please don’t hesitate to contact us, we’d love to hear from you.
