Recruiting Tips from Former Duke University and Current PLL Whipsnakes Star Midfielder - Brad Smith
What was the recruiting process like for you coming out of high school?
“I started the recruiting process the summer going into freshman year of high school, and while I wasn’t talking to any coaches at that time, recruiting camps were very helpful for my exposure. I attended a few nationwide individual recruiting camps as well as team tournaments. I wasn’t a highly sought out recruit and only visited a handful of schools. I relied heavily on my high school coach and club team coach to make introductions to college coaches.
In addition, I created a highlight tape along with a brief bio that I sent out to around thirty schools - five reaches, twenty more reasonable picks, and five safety schools - to attempt to get on these coaches radars. Leverage the Beat Sports digital portfolio offering!”
What is one thing you wish you knew before starting the recruiting process?
“These coaches are extremely busy, many times I would call the coaches at Duke and wouldn’t hear back from them for a week or two. It doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t interested, they have a fall season, a ton of other recruiting to do, families, so don’t get discouraged if you aren’t hearing back. Be patient and be consistent!”
What is one tip that you have for anyone looking to play at such a high level?
“Always continue working on your craft. No matter the sport, be a student of the game. Watch the sport on TV or wherever you can find it. I know it sounds simple but you will pick up on a ton of small things about the sport that you’ll find useful - you can never have a high enough game IQ. Second, however you can, always try and compete against the best competition possible.”
